Who Runs This
Sable & Ochre Trading Co. started in 2010 as a simple observation: too many local businesses make hiring decisions without understanding who they're actually working with. We've spent over a decade living and working in this community, building relationships with contractors, painters, remodelers, and the people who hire them.
What you'll find on this site comes from real experience. We've worked alongside skilled craftspeople, watched projects transform neighborhoods, and learned what separates good work from exceptional work. This isn't a marketplace. We're not taking commissions. We're sharing what we've learned because we believe the right recommendation saves both money and heartache.
Our perspective is straightforward: quality work is increasingly rare, and it deserves to be recognized. That's what drives everything we do here.
How We Evaluate
- Direct Experience — We've worked with local contractors and observed their methods firsthand. No referrals based on hearsay alone.
- Consistency Check — We track which providers deliver quality across multiple projects, not just once.
- Honest Conversations — We talk to the people who hired them. What problems did they solve? Where did they exceed expectations?
- Credentials Review — Proper licensing, insurance, and industry affiliations matter. We verify them.
- Integrity Assessment — Does this contractor communicate clearly? Do they keep their commitments? Do they handle changes and problems with honesty?
Learning From the Experts
We stay current with industry practices by following what professionals recommend. The video below covers one of the most important decisions you'll make: how to properly evaluate and interview a contractor before you hire them.

Why This Exists
Every recommendation we make carries our reputation. That's not pressure — it's exactly how it should be. When we tell you a contractor is worth your time, we're staking something real on it. Over years of doing this, we've realized that local business owners and homeowners are hungry for this kind of honest guidance. They don't want marketing. They want someone they can trust who actually knows the work.
This site is our way of sharing what we've learned. It started because we were tired of watching good work go unrecognized and bad work undermine entire neighborhoods. We wanted to be the people others could call for a straight answer. That's still what we do.
What We Will Not Do
We will not recommend a contractor just because they ask or pay. Membership on this site is earned through demonstrated quality and professional integrity, not negotiated. You won't find a provider here who hasn't earned their place.
We will not hide caveats or downsides. If a contractor is excellent at kitchen remodeling but less experienced in bathrooms, we'll tell you that. If they do great work but take longer than average, we'll note it. Every recommendation comes with context.
We will not mistake price for value. The cheapest option is rarely the best investment. We focus on contractors who understand that quality work costs what it costs, and it's worth it.
